1470/0855/bogus workmen

This is a Community Message from Dorset Police, we thank you for your continued support.

10052012 / Hamworthy SNT / Bogus Workmen targeting elderly and vulnerable people.

Bogus workmen are going door-to-door offering over-priced, shoddy services such as gardening, roofing and driveway repairs.

Investigations are ongoing into these rogue traders but they are becoming increasingly sophisticated in the way they do business and it’s not always easy to spot the rogues from legitimate businesses.

Some of them are using glossy, professional looking flyers with seemingly proper addresses, website details, email addresses and telephone numbers that only later turn out to be false or just a message taking service. This makes it very difficult to get the trader to come back if things go wrong. Others are using legitimate looking contracts but again these don’t contain the correct information or your cancellation rights.

Don’t agree to anything, get quotes from established businesses and don’t forget you can find trustworthy, reliable trades people who have been visited and pre-approved by trading standards on the Buy With Confidence scheme.

30042012. Following information from the media and trading standards please be wary of companies trying to sell a POWER SAVER PLUG device that they claim saves on your electricity bill.This is a scam as no plug in device can make savings,many just contain a light to indicate they are on and are poorly made and present a fire risk.

Thank you.

20032012.OLYMPIC TICKETS FOR OFFER-ADVICE FROM MET POLICE

Police are warning the public of some recent advertisements that have appeared in national and international media advertising tickets for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The advertisements just feature a mobile phone number or email address to contact for more information.

Detective Superintendent Nick Downing from Operation Podium said;

“Please do not attempt to buy tickets from adverts such as these as you risk paying over the odds for tickets that may not exist and your personal details may be stolen and used in other crimes. The safest way to buy tickets for the Olympic and Paralympic Games is from the London 2012 website. On this site you will find the most up to date information about tickets, future Olympic and Paralympic Games ticket sales and the London 2012 website checker.”

If you have tried to buy a ticket in this way please contact Operation Podium BY EMAIL at “OperationPodium@met.pnn.police.uk ”

It is illegal to advertise or sell an Olympic or Paralympic Games ticket without the appropriate authorisation from the event organisers LOCOG and carries a fine of up to £20,000 for each offence.

Operation Podium is the Met’s dedicated team to tackle serious and organised economic crime against the Games and is working to disrupt those serious and organised criminals looking to target the Games. 8162/1642/C:12:C:6632/Dist Burg/Broken down veh

This is a Community Message from Dorset Police, we thank you for your continued support.

15032012.Dorset Police would like to remind residents not to allow strangers into their home, regardless of what they are told on their doorstep. Recently an elderly occupant became victim of a distraction burglary having allowed a stranger in to her home. The male claimed his car had broken down and asked to use her phone book to call for assistance. It was subsequently discovered he had stolen cash and bankcards. This is one of many fictitious reasons used to gain entry into unsuspecting victims homes. If you are in doubt of callers legitimacy, please call a friend or neighbour to assist you in verifying their identity. Please pass this information on. Thank you.
